Boxed Up

For years, we have been boxed up.

We have been in a cramped, dark space wondering if this is all there is. We know You, Lord. We love You. We know You have set us free. Free from sin and death. Free to go to Heaven to be with You when we die. And at times in this box we are ready to come be with You because each day it feels a little bit more like death.

In this box we sense You saying, “You are free!” We say, “Yes Lord, I know what You have freed me from.” He says, “I realize you know what you are free FROM, but do you know what you are free TO?”

I have never thought about this. Free to… what? I guess I have learned all too well to die to self but have not learned to live for You. I am free to become who You see me to be. Free to become the person You have dreamed about. Free to live that dream.

But my life has been spent being obedient to the box. I don’t know how to live free. I am scared of it. There are too many “what ifs”.

I have been a part of a church and, though we all believe You, we are huddled and nervous. We are so scared of doing something wrong that we seem to never try anything which might be right. So, we remain as we are. Wondering what it must be like…”out there”.

Then He hands us the faith to cut ourselves out of the box and begin to really live!

As we cut open the lid, light floods in, and then we see others out there. Smiling. Happy. Out of their boxes. Strangely, this seems like the first day in heaven. In a way, it is. We assumed the voices we heard when we were in the box were just others in their own box. But we are now free to love! Free to live! Free to experience life in way we never have!

We are free to experience Him and to become the person He sees us to be.

When I am helping people find their sweet spot in ministry, I feel alive. When I am teaching with application of what God is saying, I feel alive. When I am helping a church re-think who they are and how to get done what God wants, I feel alive. As long as I feel like I am helping us all become more of who He wants us to be, I sense a smile from my Abba Father. Contact Doug

  1. For years I denied there was a box. Until I sensed Christ bidding me to exit the box. When you do so, it make other box lovers uncomfortable. Gently love them too. We all must get beyond the three hours on Sunday.

  2. It does not help me to put the box aside because I may retrieve it and put myself back into the box or allow my culture to do this for me. I choose to actually burn the box so that it no longer exists.

Are you in front of the cross for a selfie?

I’m afraid if found the cross of Christ in some chamber of antiquities, we would put it on display and charge people to see it (and we would probably take a selfie in front of it). When, actually, we should kneel. Are we using Christ for photo opps? Are we pointing at Him concerning how ...

Counting Oranges

If I handed you an orange you could probably take it apart and tell me how many seeds there are in it. You could count seeds in orange after orange after orange. A lot of things come into play for this to happen. Your dexterity, your ability to dismantle an orange, and your sorting and ...

Mountain Valleys

Mountain Valleys – We talk a lot about being on a mountaintop spiritually. Or the opposite – in a spiritual valley. It is easy to think of examples of both of those feelings. I wonder if we miss some great opportunities when we miss the mountains within the valleys? Most of life is not lived ...

When Masks Slap

We all wear masks at times. We hide behind them. We hide who we really are. We attempt to project a different version of ourselves. A version that either people will like or leave alone, depending on what we want. The real us is the one God loves and accepts (the masked you). However, His ...

Tiny Armor

When David goes out to face Goliath, he is offered another man’s armor. It’s just too big and doesn’t fit. So he goes with what he’s accustomed to – a slingshot and five smooth stones. In Ephesians 6 God explains some armor that is fitted just right for you. The question is do you put ...
